What is DNS4EU?
DNS4EU is an initiative by the European Commission with the goal of providing a European DNS resolver as an alternative to the prevailing public DNS resolvers in the market.
The purpose of DNS4EU is to provide EU citizens, companies, and institutions with a secure, privacy compliant, and powerful recursive DNS.
DNS4EU was officially established as the European DNS resolver service in Backbone networks for pan-European cloud federation and it was officially named as a solution to the security concerns arising from the usage of public DNS resolvers by European Union Agency for Cyber Security ENISA in its Single Programming Document 2023–2025. Finally, it was recommended in the European Parliament and Council’s directive NIS2.
Local Threat Intelligence
Thanks to the partnership and local threat intelligence exchange, DNS4EU utilises the best threat intelligence available with special attention given to EU-specific threats.
Together we increase protection against malicious activities based on both global and local (EU) threat feeds and intelligence.
The information and security data you gather for your nation and its citizens will contribute to safeguarding the people, companies and institutions within the European Union via the DNS4EU initiative.
Who can join the project?
CERTs, CSIRTs and other public or private institutions that are working with threat intelligence feeds are highly endorsed to join the project.
The Threat Intelligence exchange will run on the authenticated open source software solution MISP.
Newly published threat can propagate to DNS4EU resolver in the real time. Therefore mutual threat intelligence data exchange will lead to a safe and secure European digital space.
The consortium combines multiple cybersecurity experts from different EU countries and numerous institutions across the sectors.
Together we set up effective cooperation in the exchange of local threat intelligence. The result will be safe and secure European digital space. The institutions, companies and citizens will benefit from the shared threat intelligence network which will be able to quickly address threats specific to the EU countries.
Currently, several CERTs from the following EU countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Luxembourg) have already joined the threat information sharing part of the project.
